Joya de Cerén
Description
Joya de Cerén: a real glimpse into Maya life
In the department of La Libertad lies one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in El Salvador: Joya de Cerén, an ancient Maya village buried by the eruption of the Loma Caldera volcano over a thousand years ago. Thanks to this event, many of its houses, utensils, and communal spaces were preserved almost intact.
Here you’ll find small traces of how people lived in the past—kitchens, granaries, steam baths, and tools. It’s like seeing a photograph frozen in time, where everything remained just as it was.
The tour is short and very easy to do. There’s also a small museum that helps you better understand the site and its historical context.
Avitours Tips:
• Wear comfortable shoes—the tour is outdoors.
• Visit the museum before entering the site.
• You can also take the opportunity to visit San Andrés, just minutes away.
Joya de Cerén is the perfect place to understand our history from a different angle.
A unique and enriching experience!
